The Locust Tap
The Locust Tap is a small hole in the wall that has made a huge impression on me. Its capacity is only 50, but don’t let that fool you. The Tap offers everything a good hole in wall bar does. It has pool tables, darts, games, TVs, a jukebox, and a full bar.
The Tap is located in the East Village, making it one of the oldest bars around Des Moines. It has not been remodeled, so it is all original. That gives it a grimy feeling, but one that many have grown to love.
The hours of operation allow the Tap to serve everyone from businessmen to young kids who are barely 21. This unique combination definitely leaves a lasting impression on every victim.
Next time you are in the mood to hit up a dive or need a place to pre-game before going downtown, check out the Locust Tap. You won’t be disappointed.

This is the first bar on your site I’ve actually been to. It was after we had a three-course meal at Lucca’s–so a huge change of scenery. Do you think it will be going up-scale with all the rejuvenation happening in the East Village?

I walk by this bar in the East Village all the time and I LOVE it—even though I have never been inside. I always sneak a peek through the windows though. I love how rough it is. Everything is original, and I love that. There is something really comfortable about it. Like, who cares if you show up in a sweatshirt and jeans on a Saturday night?! I also know it’s a good bar because of the way it smells as I walk by. It smells like a big basket of fried cheeseballs and onion rings—always a good sign.

I want to hear more. What made the atmosphere and food so great? And how does the community inside the bar work-is it youngsters on one side with men old enough to be their fathers on the other? I like that you point out what’s unique about the bar, while including the basic necessities that make this bar rock. Thanks for the review!
